Like it or not but smoky skies are our new norm in South Central Idaho for August. Evenings take on a surreal cast. Mornings have a pungent and palpable air. Hoppers flicker through the tall grass and waves of tricos still clutter the air near the water's surface. Nightime temps can even be cool as the higher elevation aspen groves take on hints of yellow. Sandhill cranes now ply the skies and garble loudly. Cranes are, when in a group, referred to as a sedge, which is just right in my mind. August does not so much gasp for air as it does settle low and warm in an unhurried rush of late afternoon cumulous clouds eventually overtaken by the great blur of a giant swath of smoke...
Mountain Standard Photo Shoot
Earlier this fall I was hired to shoot for a great new clothing company located in Boulder, Colorado called Mountain Standard. The shoot was a sunrise to campfire and well beyond dark day. We had everything from scattered clouds in the morning to sun to a passing thunderstorm in the evening. Below are some images from the day. The fishermen are all local Sun Valley fly fishing guides (they guide for Picabo Angler), John Huber, Nick Anderson and Taite Pearson.

An Evening On Silver Creek
I recently photographed a family on Silver Creek and below are a few of the images. Click on any of the images to enlarge.
Brown Drake Spinner Fall
Last night's Brown Drake spinner fall was a spectacle. We usually have one super heavy night and last night was it.

Silver Creek Brown Drakes
The Brown Drakes on Silver Creek started two nights ago. This is one of my favorite times of the year to be on Silver Creek. Expect to have about 5 more good nights with tonight and tomorrow night likely to have the most prolific bugs...

Fly Fishing Photography Inspired By Nature
Along with three other artists, I was featured in a short video created on behalf of The Nature Conservancy that was recently on display at BAM (Boise Art Museum). Produced by ComDesigns, this video showcases four artists inspired by nature. ComDesigns donated their time to shoot and produce this short piece. As a fly fishing photographer and a fly fishing guide, I am a strong supporter of The Nature Conservancy and in particular the Silver Creek Preserve essentially located in my backyard. Without places like the Silver Creek Preserve the public would loose out on access to one of our country's premier spring creeks. Not only that, but The Nature Conservancy is spearheading a project on Silver Creek, that in my opinion will positively effect the entirety--not just the Nature Conservancy section--of Silver Creek by most importantly reducing water temps and mitigating siltation issues. Check out the Silver Creek Preserve site for more info regarding what is called the Kilpatrick Pond Project. The Silver Creek Preserve is for everyone and is one of my favorite places to photograph, guide, fish, walk, bird, canoe, etc...
