Big Wood River Rainbow

The warm 50˚ weather is behind us--for now at least-- and we are in the more typical low 40's and blustery weather. It blew today and last night at lower elevations as hard as it has blown all year. Semi trucks were blown over on bridges near Twin Falls today...

Below is an image of a rainbow on the Big Wood River near Ketchum, Idaho.

Big Wood River

It's Midge Madness on the Big Wood River, Idaho at the moment. While the water is a bit chalky in color from recent rain, it is improving in clarity daily and the dry fly fishing is very good. In lieu of fishing today I sat in a run with my camera and tried getting as close to rising fish as I could get without spooking them. Below are two of the images I took.

Rising Rainbow Trout

Last November I was quite obsessed with getting images of rising fish at Silver Creek. The baetis thing lasted well into the month and there were plenty of beautiful days and many of which were perfect for baetis. Instead of carrying a rod I packed my camera. I am sure a few fisherman wondered what in the world I was doing. Below is an image that slipped through the cracks.

Fishing on the Big Wood River recently has been exceptional.  Lots of midges on the surface anywhere from 11:16 AM to 3:30 or so.  The fish have been selective on the surface but at least they have been up and feeding.  The nymphing has also been really good.  Think zebra midges, girddle bugs, black anato mays, etc...  But if you are thinking of heading out in the next two or three days you might want to check the forecast first.  Looks like winter--albeit a little late--is about to start.  Here's the forecast for 7 miles west of Stanley:
