Our temps have dropped and the snowmaking has started on Baldy (Sun Valley, Idaho) and there are still a few baetis and midges around and if you are lucky you may even find a fish or two feeding on top. Below is an image of a baetis trying to get off the water just after drying its wings. For a sense of scale, you could easily put 4 or 5 of these mayflies on your pinkie.
Baetis & Reflection
The images below were taken today on Silver Creek. Pretty warm at the Creek when I was there; about 44 degrees but windy. The baetis came off anyway and there were fish up on them. This particular baetis was about a size #18. For all of you wanting one more day on the Nature Conservancy section, this is the final week of the season. Everything on Silver Creek upstream of the Highway 20 Bridge will be closed starting December 1st.
I used the Nikon Micro 105 with an extension tube for these images. Between 12:15 and about 1:30 there were a lot of baetis.

The fish were far more skittish today and did not let me get very close. I did manage to get a couple of frames just after a take or two.
Warmest day of 2011 today with highs in Mackay somewhere around 60! Sunny skies though and the baetis did not explode like they would in cloudy conditions. Still good fishing... Lots of melting snow and the Salmon River has already seen a bump in flow and will continue to see an increase overnight.
OK, here are a few pics of baetis taken at Silver Creek this morning. Pmd's, baetis and green drakes with a bit more consistency than last week. The green drake thing makes for some pretty good early afternoon blind casting opportunity after the AM baetis and pmd smorgasboard. The Big Wood looks like it is FINALLY on its way down and is 1,190 as I write this. The strongest part of the green drakes has blown through Hailey and is starting to show up in and north of Ketchum. The Lost is flowing at 1,090 cfs.
